What is Treads?

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, has officially unveiled Threads, its answer to Twitter. The app’s debut comes just three months after Meta’s initial announcement of its plans for Threads. Threads has wasted no time in making a strong impression, garnering an impressive 30 million sign-ups as of Thursday morning. Among the user base are numerous prominent figures, including brands, celebrities, journalists, and other influential individuals. The atmosphere surrounding Threads on its launch day was reminiscent of the first day of school, with early adopters eagerly flocking to the app to share their initial posts. Some even speculated whether Threads had the potential to dethrone Twitter as the dominant platform. Notably, Threads quickly climbed to the top of Apple’s App Store charts for free apps and became a trending topic on Twitter.

Let’s Delve into what we currently know about Meta’s Threads:

What is Threads? Threads is a novel app developed by Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The platform closely resembles Twitter, featuring a feed predominantly composed of text-based posts, though users can also share photos and videos. Threads facilitates real-time conversations. Meta has specified that messages posted on Threads will be limited to 500 characters. Similar to Twitter, users can reply to, repost, and quote other users’ Threads posts. However, the app incorporates Instagram’s distinct visual style and navigation system and enables the direct sharing of Threads posts to Instagram Stories.

Notably, Thread accounts can be designated as public or private, with verified Instagram accounts automatically receiving verification on Threads. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg outlined his vision for Threads in a post following its launch, stating, “The aim of Threads is to provide a friendly and optional public space for conversations. We intend to leverage Instagram’s strengths and create a fresh experience centered around text, ideas, and engaging discussions.”

In the initial hours after Threads’ release, a few users encountered sporadic glitches and content loading issues, which is expected given the simultaneous influx of millions of users to a new app.

Twitter killer or privacy killer?

Twitter killer or Privacy killer??

In this part we show the potential privacy concerns about Threads. The app, which is being developed by Meta (formerly known as Facebook), is said to collect highly sensitive user information, including health and financial data, precise location, browsing history, contacts, and search history. Meta’s business model relies on tracking and profiling users for targeted advertising, which raises questions about the app’s compliance with European Union (EU) privacy laws.

Meta initially claimed a legal basis of “performance of a contract” for processing Facebook users’ personal data but was found unlawful by the EU court. They later switched to a claim of “legitimate interest” for data processing, but the court’s recent judgement on a German case referral stated that this basis is not appropriate for Meta’s behavioral ads. The EU requires explicit consent for processing sensitive data like health information and plans to ban the use of sensitive data for ads. Meta’s lack of upfront user choice to deny tracking and profiling, as well as its previous data export violations, pose further legal challenges.

The article suggests that bringing Meta’s surveillance advertising business into compliance with EU law would require a significant change in its operations, which doesn’t seem to be the plan with Threads. The app’s launch in the EU has been delayed due to legal uncertainty surrounding data use under the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which limits data sharing across platforms. While Meta’s lead data protection supervisor, the Irish DPC, stated that there are no plans to launch Threads in the EU, it appears to be Meta’s own decision based on potential legal risks.

Threads is set to launch in the UK, where a different regulatory landscape exists since it no longer falls under EU law. Although the UK’s data protection regime aligns with the GDPR, the country’s watchdog, the ICO, has been criticized for its lack of action against surveillance advertising abuses. Meta may be more comfortable with the legal risks in the UK, especially as the government plans to water down data protection standards.

In the EU, Meta has faced significant fines for GDPR violations, and the upcoming DMA allows for penalties of up to 10% of global annual turnover. However, fines imposed on tech giants have typically been lower than the maximum allowable amount.

Overall, the privacy concerns surrounding Threads and Meta’s need to address EU privacy laws and gain user consent for data processing to comply with regulations. So are we going to see Threads in Europe? Maybe someday, maybe never.

Why, really… why!?

Have you ever wondered why you should switch to a platform developed by a company that seems to ignore its users, lacks a reliable customer service department, and tries to imitate TikTok with features like Reels? We admit that we are active on Facebook and Instagram ourselves, but it’s evident to every user that Instagram is heading in the wrong direction. Newcomers have little chance of being noticed, and existing accounts that once thrived are losing followers faster than they can gain new ones. This has led many users to resort to buying likes and followers, just to maintain their presence. And on top of that, is Meta now going to direct users away from the content and communities that are staying behind on Instagram itself. Sad, just very sad for those who were already having a hard time to get their content to be seen on Instagram.

But here’s the question: why would a platform invest so much time in developing a new platform when the existing one seems sufficient? Why would they attempt to become another TikTok or aim to dethrone Twitter? The answer lies in privacy concerns and the rapid decline of Instagram’s user base. The platform needs to take action, and what better way than to introduce a new platform, generate buzz, and start fresh, leaving behind the issues plaguing the original platform? Additionally, this move could attract users from Twitter, resulting in more followers, advertisers, and ultimately more revenue.

Interestingly, a closer look at every post by the CEOs of Instagram and Facebook reveals valuable insights into what users want. Unfortunately, these insights often go unnoticed and unheeded by Meta, the parent company. It appears that their focus is solely on acquiring more users rather than satisfying and retaining the ones they already have. Instead of leveraging the actual user feedback available in the comments section of every post made by the CEOs, Meta seems more interested in sheer numbers. is the alternative platform to rescue all pet centric people and businesses
